About the year
The extreme weather conditions of 2025 also had an impact on the vineyards: grape development was slow during the spring, with fertilization problems occurring mainly in early varieties. This year’s prospects were greatly affected by the extreme weather, so we cannot expect a record harvest this year either. Similar to last year, the dormant period for the vines was mild. The second half of January and the first half of February proved to be milder periods. Average precipitation fell during the dormant period.
Due to all these circumstances, bud break began at the average time in early April in the Jammertal vineyard. Bud break and the initial intensity of shoot growth were also average.
The nearly two months between bud break and flowering proved to be a particularly dry period. The precipitation that fell in the first two weeks of May was the reserve for the subsequent months of drought. Despite the rainy weather, flowering began at the end of May in the Siklós area as well. Flowering was very successful, which determined the subsequent quantity and quality of the grapes.
The weather continued to influence the plant protection strategy. The prolonged drought remained, so there was little need for further plant protection measures, especially in areas where intensive protection had been carried out in the plantations in the early period. Despite the spring weather, the harvest in 2025 began at the usual time, on July 30, in the Jammertal vineyard. During the initial stage of ripening, from the end of June to the beginning of August, temperatures were above average. There are no signs of drought on the fields that are already bearing fruit, as grapes thrive in warm weather and their roots reach deep into the soil, allowing them to withstand dry periods lasting two to three weeks. In contrast, the new plantings suffered greatly during this period. Ripening slowed down at this stage of the year, proceeding more slowly than in previous years.
Most of the harvest took place in dry, hot weather, which favored early varieties. It should be noted, however, that during this hot period, symptoms of drought already appeared in some varieties and the harvest had to be accelerated. The harvest continued in October under more favorable conditions, with the heat easing further, which was beneficial for red grape varieties. We concluded the harvest at the end of October with the Cabernet Sauvignon variety.
The 2025 vintage may be one of Villány’s greatest.
